The Controversy Behind George Macharia Kariuki's Donated School Uniforms: A Defense

Ndia Member of Parliament George Macharia Kariuki, commonly referred to as GK, has strongly denied allegations that he misused public funds to support a school.

In a recent media interaction, Kariuki clarified that the school uniforms he donated were purchased with his personal finances, not from the Constituency Development Fund (CDF). He emphasized that his intention behind branding the uniforms with his name was to acknowledge the source of the donation and to assist the parents in need.

The MP expressed that it is a leader’s responsibility to enhance the lives of Kenyans and insisted that such charitable acts should not be politicized. He also mentioned that the donations were entirely funded by him, not the government.

Kariuki was inspired to take action after witnessing students in worn-out clothing during his visit to the school, where he was commissioning a multipurpose hall and a school bus.

He defended the practice of branding donations, noting that it is a standard approach used by many international aid organizations, including UNICEF and World Vision. In response to criticism from his political opponents, he dismissed their claims as unfounded and politically motivated, asserting that the actual beneficiaries of his donations have not raised any concerns about the branding.
