A 57-year-old drug trafficker, Wong Hiu Fung, was apprehended at a Nairobi hotel after a failed escape attempt at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.
Having arrived from Bangkok, he cleared immigration and collected his luggage, but his plan fell apart during customs screening. As officers began to inspect his two large suitcases, Wong pretended to take a phone call and fled, leaving his bags behind.
Unfortunately for him, the Anti-Narcotics Unit found 41 sachets of cannabis sativa, weighing 41.7 kilograms, hidden in the luggage, a stash worth millions on the illegal market.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations quickly launched a manhunt, using forensic evidence to track Wong to a hotel in South C, where he was arrested without resistance.
His brief attempt at freedom ended swiftly, and he is now in custody at JKIA Police Station, awaiting drug trafficking charges. This incident highlights Kenya’s role as a transit hub for international drug trafficking and the effectiveness of its anti-narcotics operations.
